WHEN TO PAINT A ROOM WHITE AND WHEN NOT TO
almost everyone loves a bright, white room but that doesn't mean that every room can or should be painted white. my rule - lean into the natural brightness of the space. if the room gets a lot of bright, natural light then it's perfect for a few gallons of white paint. if however, the room does not get a lot of natural light or doesn't get any at all, then it's best not to paint it a bright color. painting a room with little or no natural light white (or near white) the room ends up feeling dull and smaller. it almost sucks the life out of the space. the room becomes flat somehow. that said, save your gallons of white paint for a room that sees some sunlight! my main go-to's are chantilly lace (OC-65) which is bright and has a warmer tint and super white (OC-152) which is more of a true, crisp white color, both by benjamin moore
if you have a room with little or no natural light, it's best to lean into that and go with a darker shade. i don't mean like extreme dark colors, but something around a mid-tone or darker.
see some examples below:
WHITE PAINTED ROOMS THAT DON'T SEE LITTLE OR NO NATURAL LIGHT
the rooms feel almost claustrophobic even though some shown below are quite large. as i mentioned above, the rooms have a flat dimension to them.

WHITE PAINTED ROOMS WITH NATURAL LIGHT
the white paint has depth and life!

DARKER PAINTED WALLS IN SPACES THAT DON'T SEE A LOT OF NATURAL LIGHT
you can see how the spaces below have life and depth! they're warmer and more inviting. it has character and soul!
